    Arthur Stead: Lifetime Achievement Category

    (Nominated by Jim Aziz)

    1) Achievement as a builder of the Senior Ryder Cup, which has become Canada’s largest team golf competition amongst Canadian Senior Golfers, aged 55 and over.

    2) Canada’s leading senior golfers play in the competition, which today, has 148 member clubs. The Senior Ryder Cup commenced in 1999 with 4 member clubs and through Art’s leadership in the early years as noted in the attachment, has achieved tremendous success and continues to grow as it serves as an opportunity for Senior Golfers to continue competing and that includes some competitor who are in their 80s. \In 1998, competitive seniors in Niagara region, over the age of 55, could no longer compete against younger players in Club and GAO competitions primarily due to length off tees;

      • Art Stead was the principal organizer in setting up a competition for those players aged 55 and over
      • Art Stead was the Chairman (now designated as President) for the playing seasons of 1999, 2000 and 20001. Art handled all of the administration including secretarial, treasurer. Art used his my own money for mailings, paper, envelopes etc. No one was reimbursed for items such as gas, meals, long distant calls etc. Everyone who participated were volunteers. There were no copy machines, faxes. Computers were just starting to be available but few people knew how to operate them so communication was phone or by meetings
      • In the fall of 2001 Art to set up an organization with a business like committee structure including a President, Secretary and Treasurer plus a few others to help on a committee. Art knew a committee structure was necessary because of his experience that a one-man operation would not last very long. The primary purpose of the committee structure was to establish a sound structure for future growth.
      • Once the committee structure was in place, Art commenced drafting a manual of rules and regulations that remains in place to this day with updates made over the past twenty years by subsequent SRC Boards Spent countless hours developing Governance ByLaws, policies, procedures, process to administer seasonal play, playoffs and the Championship
      • The manual outlines various duties and responsibilities, SRC bylaws, Captain responsibilities, match formats, yearly histories etc.
      • Role of President was created in 2003 and Art continued on the SRC Board as Secretary/Treasurer
      • Art left the Board after 2003 but returned in 2005 at the request of the existing Board to assist in addressing some challenges that had arisen for the Senior Ryder Cup Board and the competition
      • Art finally left the Board in 2011. However, over the next few years he was available, asa consultant, to the Board on any issues
      • Art has continued with his connection to the SRC Board up to the current time. He attends all Championship events and presents his trophy to the winning team. 3
      • The Senior Ryder Cup competition has increased from its original four clubs to today’s 148 member clubs that include 139 Ontario clubs, five New York Clubs and four clubs from Michigan.
